The benefit of choosing a domain name with keyword is that the search engines consider it as a ranking factor when calculating ranking order. Using a primary domain name that also contains a keyword relevant to your website’s content is one of the first 3 criteria used by search engines to increase page rank. Also having relevant keywords in the domain name is beneficial because the domain name is the text that other internet users will use as anchor text when linking. Thus, having a keyword related primary domain name is a good thing.

In recent years Google has made several changes in order to lower the priority of websites with keyword-rich domain names. Having a domain name that matches your target keyword does offer some benefits, like:

  • Great for a startup to gather some relevant traffic.
  • Easier to get social mentions with keywords.
  • Very effective for generic commercial intent queries.
  • Easier to get targeted anchor text.
