SocialEngine Tutorial
How to install SocialEngine
SocialEngine is a PHP/SQL application and as such you will need to download the installation files from the official SocialEngine website first. Note that this script requires license to be used. There is 15 days demo license you could start with and review the application function. However to use it in long term you should purchase a license from the script home page. After having your socialengineversion.zip (the version number is changing when a new release is available ) file downloaded, please extract it on your local computer.
The extracted files should be uploaded under your hosting account where you would like to have SocialEngine installed. When you purchase your license you should have received “license.txt” file as well. This file should be uploaded under the same folder you are uploading the socialengine files. This can be done via FTP client by following the instructions in our great ftp video tutorial.
If you would like to have your SocialEngine directly accessible from http://yourdomain.com you should upload the files under the public_html directory. On the other hand, if you would like to have it located under a subfolder you may create a subdirectory under your public_html folder where the files should be uploaded. If you upload your files under /public_html/se/ your SocialEngine installation will be accessible under http://yourdomain.com/se.
As soon as your files are uploaded under your account you should proceed with your MySQL database creation process. You can easily create a MySQL database for your CMS by following the instructions in our tutorial.
Once you have completed the above you could initiate the installation process. The setup is pretty fast and will start when you access:
http://yourdomain.com/
This will load the SocialEngine installer. You will be asked for your license key:

You can find the key in the e-mail you should have received when you purchase the application or registered for the free trial. When you have the key added you may also have your application send reports to its developers. This will provide them with additional information for better application updates in the future.
The next step will check the server requirements to ensure that these are listed. If you see any errors on that page you should contact your hosting provider to check these. If you have an account with TMDHosting you may post a ticket to request the information. Our Technical Support Team will provide you with the required details within minutes.
The third step is to add the database details you should have created in the beginning of this tutorial:

After you have filled up the details click continue and a check for the information and the MySQL services version and engine. These should both show as “OK”. If an error appears please check with your hosting provider. This check is going to pass fine on an account with TMDHosting.
On step 4 you will be asked to fill in the main admin login details:

You should note these as they will be required for the management of the script after the installation is completed. Also please ensure here that you have filled in a valid mail box because in case you lost the password for the admin account this email will be used to reset it.
After this last step you may click on the top link “Return to Admin Panel” and start building your website.
