How to add language to PrestaShop

In this tutorial we will show you how to add an extra language to your PrestaShop installation.

The first thing to do here is to download the translation you need from the store official website:

http://www.prestashop.com/en/downloads/#lang_pack

You will notice that some of the translations are not 100% completed. This means that some of the functions will still be available only in the three main languages which are integrated in the application's main installation.

For our tutorial, we will install the “German” language as it is the first from the top down which seems to be 100% completed. When you have the distribution archive of the translation downloaded on your computer you should login to your store admin back-end now:

You should use the folder name you have set for your administrators’ back-end. When the administrator panel has rendered completely navigate to Tools > Translations:



Using the import menu function select the file of the translation you have downloaded and click “Import”.

Now you need to navigate to the Tools > Languages tab and click “Add new”. The translation is installed but is not active yet. This is the menu via which we will activate it:



As we have installed German language we will fill in “German” in the name field and “de” in the ISO code. The ISO code for the language you are installing is the name of the file you downloaded excluding the .gzip or gzip.gz extension. Also select the flag for the language you are installing. When all the above is set hit save and you should  see the new translation added:
