How to create a category/product in OpenCart

We will show you in this tutorial in a few simple steps how to add new categories/products on your OpenCart website.

When you have completed the installation you have noticed that there are sample products loaded on your store. These are added by the developers of the script in order to help you start building the store. Reviewing the demo products/categories will help you start your online store.

You should login to your store admin back-end now:

http://yourdomain.com/admin

If you have completed the installation under a subfolder “store” for an example the above URL will change to:

http://yourdomain.com/store/admin

The categories and the products are managed from the same main navigation menu which is called “Catalog”:



The first tab we will select is the categories. Here when the page is completely loaded you will notice the “Insert” button at the very top right corner of the category section. This button will allow you to create new categories for your website. It is important to have your products well categorized as this will allow your visitors to find easily what they need. Ultimately, this will lead to more customers for you and less people that just visit your store and leave it without purchasing anything.

When you have all the categories for your store created you may proceed and add the products via the Catalog > Products tab.

The menus available for each new product will load when you edit or add a new one:



All the menus are pretty much self-explanatory and it is highly recommended to go through all these and fill the information for the product you will be adding.

As we have two languages installed (How to add a language in OpenCart) on our demo OpenCart setup you will notice on the above screenshot that on the General tab there is English and French language available. If you offer multiple translations on your store all the products’ information should be added for each of these accordingly.
