How to add categories in Magento

We will show you in this tutorial how to add categories in your Magento store in a few simple steps.

The first step is to login to the administrator back-end of the store:

http://yourdomain.com/index.php/admin

If you have installed Magento under a subfolder of the www root folder for an example “store” you should add this directory name before the index.php.

Once the admin back-end is completely rendered navigate to the Catalog > Manage Categories tab:



The page will load the empty default root category. This one will hold all the categories of your store. You may of course add a second root category to separate for example mp3 from dvd players.

On the first tab is “General Information” all the fields are pretty much self-explanatory.  After you have filled these in click on the “Display Settings”:



Here you may select the way the products will be listed in this category. Also you may select what type of content will be listed.

The next function is the Custom Design. This is a function which regrettably is not available on many shopping carts by default. It will allow you to select different theme for each category which can fit the products you have in the category:



The menus here are pretty much self-explanatory.

And the last tab on the category configuration is Category Products. Here you may review the products listed under this category. You have the option to add new product to a category during the product creation process for which you may check:
